White Peacock 048 | Ghosts and Demons: Confronting Inner Greed to Pass the Demon's Trial and Become a True Disciple
Question: Why are we drenched in fear in daily life, yet meet unwarranted setbacks and trials the moment we practice or pursue growth?
Answer: Because the world fears external ghosts, unaware that inner greed has already turned them into the “ghosts” of desire; while the arrogance and pride of practitioners invite “demons.” These setbacks and “demonic trials” are not external punishments—they are the system’s tests to govern and tame one’s mind-nature. Only by passing them can one become an awakened true Buddha disciple.
Imagery World: The Illusion of Ghosts and Demons and the Trial of Mind-Nature

Chinese people fear ghosts,
Western people fear ghosts too…
People die and become ghosts,
Arrogant practitioners die and become demons.
Ordinary people fear ghosts clinging to them,
Little knowing that before they even die,
they have already become lust ghosts, lazy ghosts, money ghosts, gambling ghosts, dirty ghosts, creepy ghosts, gluttonous ghosts…
In every shape and form, a riot of varieties,
more kinds than real ghosts.
Practitioners, too, need demons to test them—
Those who haven’t made any headway,
demons won’t even bother.
Tests come in favorable, adverse, internal, external…
Though called demonic trials,
they are in fact the manifestation of governing one’s own mind-nature.
Those who meet ghosts but never demons
are ordinary people…
Those who face demonic trials and pass
are true Buddha disciples.
| Entity & Imagery | Origin & Target | Secular & Spiritual Manifestation | Systemic Significance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ghost | Ordinary people’s worldly greed, attachment, and fear | Reduced to slaves of desire—lust ghosts, money ghosts—yet paradoxically fearing the unknown | Trapped in the daily samsara, drained by low-dimensional desire |
| Demon | Practitioners’ arrogance and pride | Facing ghosts and demons trials in every form—favorable and adverse | Serving as high-dimensional tests to govern mind-nature, selecting and perfecting true Buddha disciples |

(System Log)
世俗貪念(manifests as)五花八門的鬼 (慾望奴隸)自大的修行人(attracts and becomes)魔魔考 (順逆考驗)(is required to temper)自我心性通過魔考(validates one as a)真佛子
