Question: Faced with the body’s aging and decay, and the fear of birth, aging, sickness, and death—how do we settle the mind?

Answer: Recognize that the body and the arising and passing of emotions are merely the “False Self”—brief as a rainbow. See the body as a “Dharma Vessel” for ferrying sentient beings across, for fulfilling its purpose—and cherish it, use it well. And know that the “True Self” of emptiness is deathless. Then you can let go of gain and loss, and attain the Great Fearlessness before life and death.

Rainbow — The Illusory Arising and Passing of Seven Colors


A beautiful seven-colored rainbow,
stretching from one end to the other,
seeming to truly exist…
The sun appears, or the clouds thicken,
and the rainbow vanishes—
like an illusion, leaving no trace…

The mind of endless arising and passing,
is the False Self of ignorance,
mistaking the unreal for the real,
in birth, aging, sickness, and death,
cycling without end.

The awakened mind of emptiness,
is the True Self that holds heaven and earth,
the rapture of having gained nothing,
the absence of any loss,
merely an ineffable, undifferentiated expanse.

The Body as Vessel and Great Fearlessness

The body’s preciousness lies in this—
it is a Dharma Vessel for ferrying sentient beings across,
imperfect as it is,
I still cherish it.

But if it is destined to be destroyed,
no need for sorrow,
for the True Self is deathless—Great Fearlessness!
