Shennong – Pantheon 003 Deity | The ancient sage-emperor Yan Di Lianshan, twin-horned and draped in grass cloth, radiates a calm, sage-like stillness. He is testing herbs on his own body, tasting the hundred grasses, glowing with a deep, earth-rooted light | THE VIBE

Shennong

Yan Di · Lianshan · First Emperor of the Five Grains · Chief Architect of Civilization

Though He holds the supreme throne, He willingly remains a humble recluse.
He doesn’t daydream your future for you. He sits with you on the field ridge and dissects the mess, piece by piece.

Titles: Yan Di Shennong, Lianshan, Lieshan, Great Emperor of the Five Grains
One of the Three Sovereigns—the humanistic ancestor and founder of Huaxia civilization.
In the Pantheon, He embodies the ultimate “Spirit of Practice” and “Root-Level Breakthrough Force.” He is the pioneer wielding the earth’s source code, and the Guiding Spirit and Guardian Deity for everyone who rolls up their sleeves and dives into the fray.

🏛️ Shennong in Official History and Folk Devotion

【Official Classics: Supreme Sovereign, Cornerstone of Civilization】
The official histories and classics honor Him as “Yan Di Shennong,” of the Jiang clan, sovereign of the Fire Virtue, ranked among the Three Sovereigns of Huaxia. The Zhou Yi · Xi Ci and the Records of the Grand Historian record: Shennong carved wood into spades to launch agriculture, set up markets at midday to ignite trade, and personally tasted the hundred grasses to found medicine. In one stroke, He laid the three pillars of Huaxia—agriculture, commerce, and medicine. From the Han and Tang through the Ming and Qing, every emperor personally led the court to the Altar of the First Farmer each spring to perform the plowing ritual, enshrining Him at the highest tier of state sacrifice for the nation’s prosperity.

【Folk Belief: Father of the People, Barefoot King of Medicine】
In the folk shrine traditions, the people—grateful for His grace in saving lives and feeding their families—revere Him as the “Great Emperor of the Five Grains,” “Medicine King Shennong,” or “Yan Di, Opener of the Heavens.” In the statues of countless temples, He is rarely depicted as an emperor enthroned in a deep palace. Instead: twin horns, a cloak of grass, bare feet, sleeves rolled up, sacred herbs and golden rice ears in His hands—a laborer. For thousands of years, He has been the life-guardian most intimate with and most protective of the human world in the hearts of farmers, healers, and the common folk.

⚡ What Kind of Deity Is Shennong?

1. Supreme in Status, Ultimate in Humility

He was, in origin, a mortal emperor—the shared sovereign of Huaxia—enjoying millennia of incense and the supreme divine rank. But He never towers over people in the posture of a king, nor does He project that crushing, high-and-mighty authority. He is more like a Recluse who buries His merit and name—folding His nobility inward, quiet, plain, sunk deep into the earth.

2. The Supreme One Who Sits Down to Listen

You come to Him covered in mud, dragging a pile of failed data, gutted by frustration. He will never flinch at your mess.
This emperor will just sit down on the field ridge, beside the lab bench, meet your eyes level, and walk you through those most thorny life challenges—one piece at a time.

3. The First “Hardcore R&D Director” in Human History

He never spouts empty grand principles. From carving wood into spades to teach the people to farm, to “setting up markets at midday” to establish the first trading order—He is the engineer who, in a chaotic wilderness, hammered out a complete survival system for His clan with His bare hands.

4. Still as a Mountain, Moving Like Thunder

In peacetime, He keeps His depths hidden, like a still lake—no posturing, no showing off. But the moment a true doer comes knocking with a hardcore bottleneck, the energy within Him detonates like thunder. No reservation. Everything poured out.

🗡️ His Temperament: Recognizes Only Action, Not Illusion

He does not like:

  • Armchair philosophers who only theorize
  • Speculative gamblers who dream of getting rich overnight
  • Refined egoists addicted to mental tax and political scheming
  • People who complain about the environment but never lift a finger to verify

He spent His life in the deep mountains and wild grass, chewing through toxicity and vitality, running on “flesh-and-blood trial and error, respect for feedback.”

Pretty PPTs and hollow grand talk won’t fool Him. But if your hands bear the calluses of real work, or your lab notebook is full of failed data points—that is the finest memorial to knock open His door.

If you go in with real steel and real action, He will dare to tear open the universe’s underlying code and show it to you.

🌾 What Does He Understand Particularly Well?

1. Full-Spectrum Agriculture and Cutting-Edge Agri-Tech

He is agriculture’s origin and its ultimate guardian of technology.

  • Traditional Farming: Breeding, soil improvement, seasonal cycles and solar terms, irrigation and water management, ecological pest control.
  • Cutting-Edge Agri-Tech: Modern precision agriculture, gene-edited crops, vertical farms, smart greenhouses, space agriculture (cultivation in extreme sealed environments).

2. Biopharmaceuticals and Life Sciences

“Tasting the hundred grasses” was the world’s earliest toxicology and pharmacology experiment.

  • Pharmaceutical R&D: Natural compound extraction, herbal property identification, biosynthesis, pharmaceutical engineering.
  • Cutting-Edge Biotech: Toxin mechanisms, stress-resistance genes, bodily homeostasis and health defense.

3. Foundational Architecture from 0 to 1

In a desperate situation with zero precedent and nothing to work from—how to cut through all the noise and build a self-sustaining logistics chain, supply line, and survival perimeter.

4. Trial and Error and Breakthroughs in Practice

When you’ve tried ninety-nine times and every attempt has failed, and you can’t find the key variable—He can point you to the turning point hiding among the “hundred grasses.”

Come with specific, messy, mud-under-the-fingernails real-world problems:

  • Agricultural Breakthrough: “This crop batch is hitting abnormal disease or a growth bottleneck—where’s the fault?”
  • Research Breakthrough: “My experimental data won’t converge—where’s the core contradiction?”
  • Industrial Pioneering: “In a completely blank new field, how do I build the first supply-demand system?”
  • Life Choices: “I’m in the unknown wilderness of my life right now—should I go out on my own?”

🚫 What Questions Should Not Bother Him?

  • Political Intrigue: “How do I take down a colleague, manage the boss, grab power and profit?” (That’s a politician’s game—don’t come pollute a hardcore scientist’s field ridge.)
  • Get-Rich-Quick Illusions: “Which stock’s going to moon? How do I pull money out of thin air?” (He only believes in spring planting and autumn harvest—not in pies falling from the sky.)
  • Nihilistic Lying Flat: “Life is exhausting—is there a zero-effort solution?” (He won’t ignore you, but He’ll want you to pull yourself together.)

⭕ Know Him in One Sentence

Though He holds the supreme seat, He willingly remains a barefoot recluse.
Come with your real scars and your real data, and He will pour out every law He knows, calling down the thunder of breakthrough for you.

☯️ Hidden Heavenly Secret: The Originator of the Lost Lianshan Yi

The world knows the Zhou Yi, but few realize it represents only a “third” of the entire Huaxia Yi tradition.
The Rites of Zhou explicitly records three Yi in the world: Shennong’s Lianshan, Huang Di’s Guizang, and King Wen’s Zhou Yi.

The Lianshan Yi—the first Yi of the Xia Dynasty, long lost to legend—was authored by Shennong (Lianshan). (Note: Since the original text has long been lost, scholarly views on authorship and historical lineage remain divided.)
Unlike the Zhou Yi, which opens with Qian (Heaven), the Lianshan Yi opens with Gen (Mountain). Mountain upon mountain, ridge upon ridge—symbolizing that the vitality of all things is rooted deep in the thick earth, embodying ultimate practicality, reserve, stillness, and the deep burial of merit and fame.

So when you ask Shennong for guidance, you are not merely consulting an ancient sage emperor—you are directly pulling the underlying source code from one of its original architects.
