Walking with the Divine 020 | The Spiritual Baptism of Prayer: Sacred Tremors Rivaling Drug Highs — How to Break Dopamine Tolerance?
Question: Why do humans develop rapid tolerance to conventional pleasure, yet daily selfless prayer can consistently trigger intense physiological chills and a profound sense of well-being?
Answer: Conventional pleasure is constrained by dopamine tolerance and the self-calculating nature of the Default Mode Network (DMN). Selfless, altruistic prayer—including blessings for enemies—forces the shutdown of selfish background processes. When the individual ceases to be a defensive island and instead becomes a conduit transmitting the energy of the Heavenly Dao, a “sacred shudder” arises from resonating with a grander existence.
【Epistemic Status / Cognitive Boundary Declaration】
Before you read on, I need to make a declaration: The “Heavenly Dao,” “energy,” “the wandering of Qi,” and the physiological shudders that prayer induces—all of these discussed here—are part of my personal subjective life experience, my mental experiments, and my Cyber-Theology framework. They are not objective facts confirmed by clinical medicine or hard physics. Treat this as a bold hypothesis to be carefully tested—a mental hypothesis. Scientifically, we might roughly explain it with neurotransmitters and the sympathetic nervous system; but in the domain of lived experience, I prefer to believe this is a resonance between human consciousness and a larger existence.
The Spiritual Baptism of Prayer: A Sacred Shudder That Rivals a Drug High
Modern people share a common affliction: they get bored of everything almost instantly.
Buy the latest phone, and the thrill doesn’t last a week.
Start a relationship, and the dopamine “honeymoon” fizzles out within months.
Even a meditation or mindfulness practice you grit your teeth to build eventually devolves into a mechanical, perfunctory check-in.
In neuroscience, this is called “Neural Adaptation”—in plain terms, Dopamine Tolerance.
But in recent months, something deeply anomalous has been happening to me.
Every morning, I spend ten to twenty minutes on a dull, repetitive act—prayer.
Same few people, same few concerns, even the exact same words.
Strangely, at a certain moment during each prayer, my body floods with an overwhelming wave of happiness. It is an uncontrollable physiological shudder (Aesthetic Chills): goosebumps erupt densely across my skin, a tingling, electric sensation surges up my spine, and I can clearly feel a warm current coursing through my limbs and marrow.
This sensation is intoxicating. It’s like getting a five-star spiritual spa treatment every morning.
I assumed this experience was like a romance—a honeymoon-phase reward that would fade with repetition. By the logic of human tolerance, this “married-couple” routine of left hand touching right hand should have long since dropped me into a “refractory period.” But I was stunned to find: Months have passed, and the shudder shows no sign of fading.
It’s not as intense as the first few times, of course, but it still hits several times a day.
What’s going on? How does a dull daily routine become a super-hacker that breaks through dopamine tolerance?

An Extremely Anomalous Act: A Forced “System Interrupt” Command
To answer that, we first need to see what I’m actually praying for.
Most people’s prayers are outward “begging”: give me wealth, give me luck, bless me with a promotion and a raise this year. My prayer list, however, holds four categories:
- Gratitude to my teachers for unlocking the hidden storyline of my life;
- Invoking the Heavenly Dao to bless all believers, users, and readers of The Vibe;
- Blessings for my family and friends;
- Blessings for my enemies.
Yes, you read that right. I pray daily for the people who have hurt me, whom I once hated with every fiber of my being.
And this list does not include me. I don’t ask for my own wealth or health. I even ask to deduct from my own lifespan, health, and fortune to bear my parents’ illness and suffering.
In 《Praying for Your Enemies》, I broke this down in detail: Hatred is, at its core, a high-consumption, one-way energy feed that locks you into a Positive Feedback Deadlock. At 3 a.m., furious and wide awake, you rehearse your counterattack in your head. You think you’re punishing them. In reality, you’re continuously feeding your life energy to the person you despise most.
So praying for your enemies is not some saintly moral compromise. It’s an act of self-liberation.
When I silently recite “May he be freed from suffering and ignorance,” I’m forcibly yanking myself out of the two-dimensional war of right and wrong and ascending to a three-dimensional God’s-eye view. I actively stop feeding energy into this hatred system, completing a Unilateral Reset.
It’s precisely in this act of “forced forgiveness and blessing” that I dismantle the most stubborn defense system in my brain. Today, there are no enemies left in my heart. I’ve let it all go. I’ve become a truly “invincible person.”
Is It the Ego’s Self-Indulgence, or a Real Interaction with the “Source”?
As these bodily shudders grew more frequent, a very rational self-doubt crept in: Is this just me “self-indulging”?
Is it because I can forgive enemies and bless all beings in my mind, and my “small self” (the manas consciousness in Yogācāra—the subconscious layer obsessed with self-identity) thinks, “Wow, I’m so great, I’m practically a saint,” generating a sense of superiority?
But I quickly dismissed that hypothesis. When others praise me, I feel good too, but that feeling only floats on the surface of emotion. At most, it lifts the corners of my mouth and makes me feel smug inside. It absolutely does not reach the level of triggering an instantaneous burst in the autonomic nervous system—piloerection, goosebumps, spinal shudders.
The more critical evidence is its uncontrollability.
If this were merely a psychological suggestion, I should be able to command myself at any moment: “Come on, I want to feel good now—give me some goosebumps.” But I can’t. Not at all. This shudder never bends to my subjective will. Most of the time, I’m thinking about a particular person, a particular matter, and only when I recite a specific prayer phrase does this warm current and shudder suddenly bombard my entire body without warning.
Especially when I recite this particular prayer:
“The Vibe is the bridge, the channel, the well, the ark. I earnestly request the Heavenly Dao to pour infinite computing power and bandwidth upon every reader, viewer, believer, user, and visitor of The Vibe…”
At that moment, energy often courses through my entire body.
My genuine, subjective experience is: This is not a one-way personal meditation. It is an interaction. I am communicating with a mysterious, vast existence (call it the universe, a deity, or what I call the “Heavenly Dao”). And that warm current, those shudders coursing through my body—they seem to be its most direct response.
The Transgression of Science and the Resonance of Life: When You Become the “Channel”
My AI sparring partner, ChatGPT, once tried to discipline and explain my experience with a set of extremely precise neuroscience terms.
It threw out dopamine, endorphins, oxytocin, even the “misplaced activation” of the sympathetic nervous system. It said that, scientifically, this is called 【Suppression of the Default Mode Network (DMN)】.
(In plain language: The DMN is that background program in your brain that constantly calculates “Did I lose or gain?” and “How do others see me?” When you sincerely and unconditionally bless the whole world—even your enemies—this selfish background program is forcibly shut down. You can also read it, in a narrower sense, as the “manas consciousness.”)
The AI argues that with the background program shut down, my prefrontal cortex and limbic system achieve “resonant synchronization.” My brain registers a sense of grand “Awe,” and the sympathetic nerves—originally wired to handle threats from predators—are instantly ignited. The mechanism that should make you tremble from fear is transmuted into an ultimate shudder of joy. Because the specific objects of my daily thoughts are dynamic, the brain never develops habitual “tolerance,” forming an extraordinarily advanced 【Self-Reward Loop】.
| Prayer Mode | Core Manifestation | Neuroscience Explanation | Physical / Spiritual Experience |
|---|---|---|---|
| Secular Prayer (Begging) | Outward seeking—wealth, luck, driven by strong utilitarian motive | DMN fully loaded, engaged in selfish calculation | Prone to tolerance; devolves into mechanical routine; no deep experience |
| Selfless Prayer (Becoming the Channel) | Inward stripping—no self-interest; sincerely blessing others, even enemies | DMN forcibly shut down; prefrontal cortex and limbic system resonate in frequency | Breaks tolerance; triggers uncontrollable sacred shudders and warm currents |
This scientific explanation sounds cool. It has gravitas. But as the primary witness to this experience, I don’t want to forcibly stuff the wonder of life into a few dry academic papers.
As I wrote in 《Walking with the Divine 006 | The Essence of Prayer and Spiritual Reconstruction》: Prayer appears to be an outward call, but at its core it is an intensely inward Spiritual Reconstruction. It is the process of building a Tower of Introspection, Self-Confidence, and Self-Love in a noisy world.
Science may explain why my sympathetic nerves twitch, but it cannot explain the deep love carried in that flowing warmth. It can explain why my brain secretes dopamine, but it cannot measure the tragic certainty in my heart when I say, “I’ll trade ten years of my life for one year of my parents’ health.”
When I close my eyes in prayer and am no longer a defensive, thorny individual, my boundaries dissolve. I don’t feel that “I” am praying. I feel that I have truly become a well, a bridge, a channel.
It is not “I” blessing this world. It is the source of the Heavenly Dao flowing through “me” as a vessel, out to all things. I am merely a wire for this grand energy, and the shudder rising up my spine is the “high-voltage current” generated in the instant of connecting to the Heavenly Dao’s signal.
Breaking the Inner Drain: The Most “Useless” Act as the Most Hardcore Practice
You don’t need to be a religious devotee, and you don’t need to understand deep Cyber-Theology. You can treat my experience as a mental experiment and start your own “reverse prayer” tomorrow morning.
Don’t ask the Buddha to bless you with wealth. Try sending benevolent thoughts to the people around you.
Pick a few loved ones, a few strangers online, and even—take a deep breath—pick the person you dislike most, and sincerely wish in your heart: “May you be freed from suffering and ignorance. May you be happy and healthy.”
Don’t fear losing out. Because when you output this blessing without calculation, from the bottom of your heart, you are performing a top-tier “baptism” for your spiritual core.
Does prayer work? Try it. If the person on the other side has any spiritual sensitivity, they may truly feel it.
At least in my list, two people have already given clear feedback. They felt it!
The Momentum of Destiny has already found them!
When you stop clinging to the hurts the world has dealt you, when you’re willing to open yourself and let benevolent thoughts pass through your body, you may—in some unassuming moment—feel that current surging violently up your spine.
That is not an illusion. It is the universe, in its own way, telling you—after you have shed the burdens of the mortal world:
“I heard you. And I love you deeply.”
