Richard's Essays 024|The 7-Dimensional Perspective on Gum: Breaking Mediocrity and Training Informational Leverage to See the Big Picture in Small Details
Question: In daily life and thought, how do ordinary people avoid the Emperor’s Golden Hoe delusion and cultivate a depth of cognition no machine can simulate?
Answer: Use the 7-Dimensional Thinking Method to dissect reality. From intuition, the Actor, the Receiver, the Surface, the Core, the Local, to the Macro—reject speculation untethered from lived experience (the Emperor’s Golden Hoe), and let your biases carry body heat and pain. Through deliberate practice on everyday objects (a piece of chewing gum, say), grow Seeds of Thought that belong to humanity alone.
I wrote a piece before—The Mediocrity Trap in the AI Era: Humans Provide Seeds of Thought, AI Is Just an Amplifier—about how, in the age of AI, a human can still leave behind a few “Seeds of Thought” that smell like a person.
Yesterday I was walking with my daughter. We’d been strolling a while, and the boredom started creeping in. I remembered the “7-Dimensional Thinking Method” we’d talked about before, so I figured: why not try it on whatever’s in front of me? I turned. She was chewing gum, puffing out a bubble. Fine. Chewing gum it is.
What follows is the “7-Dimensional Perspective on Chewing Gum” my daughter and I sliced open mid-stride. It’s not a rigorous academic report. It’s an impromptu thought experiment, walked into existence.

1. Intuitive Perspective (Gut Feeling and Raw Perception)
First sight. No grand theories, no “be polite” conditioning. What’s your raw, gut-level reaction?
- If you see it somewhere other than in a mouth: Two words—disgusting, filthy. Stuck under a desk, on a bus seat, smeared across your own sleeve. Even touching it makes your skin crawl.
- If you see it in someone else’s mouth: If someone’s right in my face, smacking their lips and chewing hard, my first instinct is usually: this person is a bit flippant, careless—or just not really listening to me. (My daughter jumped in right away: “I am listening to you, okay!”)
2. Actor Perspective (Active Behavior and Intention)
You’re the one “initiating this.” What are you actually thinking? What are you doing?
Here’s where people trip into a major taboo—wild speculation. My dad used to tell this joke when I was a kid. Two old farmers sit down and discuss the Emperor’s life. One says: “When the Emperor wakes up, there’s gotta be a pot of fried dough sticks by his bedside. Eyes open, fresh ones waiting.” The other: “Not just that! When the Emperor works the fields, he’s swinging a golden hoe!”
That’s the textbook delusion (Emperor’s Golden Hoe). I’ve said it before: the Actor lens means looking from the person who’s driving the action. You’re the gum company CEO, the sales rep, the product designer… But if you’ve never run a gum factory, never mixed gum base in a lab, don’t sit there fantasizing about “the boardroom chess of a gum tycoon.” What you haven’t lived, you haven’t lived. You can’t fake it. If you genuinely can’t find an angle, skip it. Be honest. Go back to what you’ve actually done: You’ve chewed gum in front of people, right? That’s your real Actor experience. The “Act” here is shoving the act of chewing into someone else’s line of sight.
- When I chew in front of people, sometimes it’s a deliberate signal: “I’m relaxed, this is a casual vibe, let’s all drop the pretense.” But as I’ve gotten older, I basically don’t chew in public anymore. I always spit it out before I see a soul.
- As a kid, I pulled my share of stunts—like quietly smearing a spent piece of gum under a desk. Pure kid mischief.
- Sometimes it’s just to mask a bad mouth. But honestly, mint drops and sugar-free breath mints are way more convenient. I rarely chew just for breath anymore.
3. Receiver Perspective (Empathy and True Cost)
You’re the one this thing hits. Where does it actually hurt?
- Personal, physical disgust: Decades ago in Zhengzhou, I was on the bus in a nice new pair of slacks. I stood up and found a big wad of someone else’s spit-out gum stuck to my ass. The disgust, the rage at a ruined pair of pants—I still feel it. Same story in Sweden: gum smeared on the seatbelt. They’d cleaned it, but a hard, unerasable residue remained. It didn’t cling to your clothes, but looking at it still made your skin crawl.
- A chronic public-space wound: Gullmarsplan in Sweden is a major transit hub. Right next door is a stadium that hosts football matches and concerts. After tens of thousands file out, the ground is peppered with dense, un-washable black dots—every one a trampled piece of gum. Locals file complaints regularly. It’s been in the news more than once. The city’s pressure washers can’t even budge it.
- The invisible cost: Modern gum base is long past natural tree sap. It’s essentially synthetic plastic made from petrochemicals—styrene-butadiene rubber, polyvinyl acetate, that sort of thing. In other words, what people casually spit on the ground is plastic garbage in a food costume. It doesn’t degrade. That’s why it can squat on concrete for years. (Not every gum is plastic-based, but the profit motive means what you’re chewing is almost certainly a petrochemical product.)
4. Surface Perspective (Official Narrative and Public Packaging)
What’s the “show” on the big screen? How do the ads and the brands “educate” us?
Going back to Doublemint, the official narrative branded it a “social essential” and a “breath refresher.” When gum first hit the mainland, pulling a Doublemint from your pocket was the uniform of the cool kid.
The first time I had gum, I assumed it was like bubble gum—you could blow big bubbles. Turns out, after chewing it for a while, it just went soft and sticky. No bubbles. I was baffled: not sweet, can’t blow bubbles—what’s the point of this thing?
5. Core and Hidden Perspective (First Principles and Undercurrents)
Tear off the glossy ad copy. What’s actually happening to this business’s survival mechanism?
- An increasingly awkward niche: On fun, it can’t beat bubble gum. On fresh breath, it’s getting clobbered by gum-free lozenges that leave zero residue and dissolve clean. In a proper business setting, chewing gum looks unseemly, and spitting it out means hunting for a tissue everywhere—very undignified.
- An unexpected killer: the smartphone. Gum’s biggest sales channel used to be the supermarket checkout. Those two or three minutes in line—people are restless, eyes darting around the shelf, and they grab a pack of gum to kill the boredom or the anxiety. Now? Everyone’s staring at their phone in line. The smartphone uprooted gum’s entire “boredom substitute” ecosystem. All it can do now is retreat into the narrowest of niches: long-haul drivers fighting drowsiness, athletes managing stress, quitters scratching an itch.
6. Local Perspective (Atomized Observation)
Forget the grand narrative. Zoom in. Pin the camera on one very specific personal lesson.
Lately, gum brands have been desperately stacking buffs on the packaging: vitamins, zinc, xylitol for dental protection… But most of the time, it’s the same old trick in a new wrapper.
I fell for it. I was young, gullible, bought the “xylitol protects your teeth” line, and chewed it every day. There was a stretch where I’d fall asleep with gum still in my mouth. The result? Several of my molars went completely hollow. Not long after, I bit into a fried peanut and a tooth just—shattered. Right there.
Later I checked the ingredient list and realized: in a lot of “xylitol” gums, xylitol is just one ingredient. They still load in hidden sugars and acidic additives for flavor. You think you’re protecting your teeth. In reality, they’re soaking in acid for twenty-four hours a day, slowly corroding.
7. Macro Perspective (Systems Theory and Overall Evolution)
Pull up to altitude. Piece together the scattered fragments:
Gum was born from the industrial era’s fresh appetite for social polish and rode the consumerism wave to ubiquity. But because of the gum itself, it breeds flippant misreadings in social settings, stubborn plastic waste in public spaces, and even pushed Singapore to legislate against it.
Technology marches on. Ahead, gum-free lozenges siphon off the demand. Behind, the smartphone strips away the pre-checkout boredom. Its habitat is visibly shrinking. To save itself, it’s plastered on health and nutrition labels. Strip those away, and what’s left is: a slab of sweetened petrochemical plastic.
| Thinking Dimension | Perspective Focus | Real Deduction for “Chewing Gum” |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Intuitive | Raw perception | Disgusting, filthy, flippant eating manners |
| 2. Actor | Avoid delusion; ground in real experience | Releasing a casual signal, masking odor, kid mischief |
| 3. Receiver | True cost and pain | Ruined slacks, stubborn urban black dots, plastic waste |
| 4. Surface | Official narrative | Social essential, breath refresher, cool-kid uniform |
| 5. Core | Underlying survival mechanism | Outcompeted by gum-free lozenges; the smartphone killed the “queue boredom” purchase trigger |
| 6. Local | Atomic, specific lesson | False xylitol dental claims → hollow molars → a shattered tooth |
| 7. Macro | Overall evolution and essence | Sweetened petrochemical plastic in a health costume; habitat steadily shrinking |
A Random Thought: How to Actually Use This Framework
This whole thing came out of a walk with my daughter. We just talked. It’s not an authoritative conclusion. It’s loaded with my personal biases—the heartache over those Zhengzhou pants, the terror of that tooth shattering, the revulsion at the Gullmarsplan black dots.
And that’s the point: This is what makes human thinking irreplaceable.
If you want to use this framework to sharpen your own thinking, two quick notes:
- Don’t speculate from any angle—especially the Actor.
Don’t fall into the Emperor’s Golden Hoe trap. What you haven’t done, you haven’t done. Never bought a stock? Don’t play fund manager. Never started a company? Don’t play industry titan. Where you’re out of your depth, skip it cleanly or go verify. Build on what you’ve done with your own hands, the pits you’ve personally waded through. Only then does what you write have a spine and flesh. - Don’t chase perfection. Allow bias. Allow one-sidedness.
Don’t try to write a flawless, five-star essay. Comprehensive objectivity is the job of search engines and LLMs. They’re great at melting ten thousand voices into a pot of lukewarm tap water.
We are living, breathing humans. When you run seven dimensions across a thing, sure, each beam of light is one-sided. But stack seven razor-deep “one-sidednesses” together, and your brain is already spinning faster than the vast majority of the herd. We don’t compete with AI on breadth. The Zhuangzi says: “My life has a boundary; knowledge does not. To chase the boundless with the bounded is to court ruin.” What we’re training is the speed and precision of the mental blade—not building a Wikipedia in our skulls.
Find a spare moment. Grab a cup, a charging cable, even a disposable takeout container. No pen needed. Just spin it in your head. When you can stop letting official narratives pull your nose, when you can see more than one face in the trivial stuff of daily life—you’ve unlocked the power to read the whole from a single detail.
Peace!
